Every small business has to the potential to grow and expand. This is every business owners’ dream

come true. Sometimes, small businesses need a sense of direction or advice from sources more experienced than them. When looking for small business tips, you can always get some from experienced entrepreneurs. These are individuals who have been in business for a long time and have managed to overcome many challenges.

Small business forums are another excellent choice when you need small business tips. You get to socialize and exchange ideas with other business owners. If you have a question, there are people willing to help and give you answers. You also get to know other individuals who are in a similar business as you are. They can give you support if your business is going through some challenges and even help you overcome them. Everyone has their own definition of small business tips. You have to learn to differentiate what can work for your business and what may not apply.

However, there are general business tips that many successful businesses have used over the years. When you are starting or already have a small business in existence, one thing that is a requirement is that you have to know yourself, your product or service and your business. Have a clear vision and direction. You have to know how to merge your strengths with your target market. Knowledge of your product or service is an assurance to the customer that you have confidence in whatever you are doing.

The mechanics of running the business should be at your fingertips. If for example all your employees were to go on strike, you have to be able to do and manage what they are employed to do. You have to know your business in and out. Keep an open mind and learn how to use technology for the advancement of your business. In addition be consistent, honest and always do exceptional work.

Small Business Tip – How to Solicit a Customer Testimonial

Tipson August 8th, 2009No Comments
Customer testimonials for your small business can be a valuable marketing tool … if done the right way. But how do you get a customer testimonial that is meaningful?

I’ve found that politely asking long-term clients for feedback works best. When they let you know how pleased they are with the work, ask them if they would mind if you featured their comments on your website or in a brochure. I’ve yet to run into a client that said “no”. It increases their visibility as well.

If you have clients who indicate that there may be problems with the work your company has performed (and in my experience, there are always some clients who have requests for improvement), you can use that information to perfect your business.

Another way to handle this is to work with 2 or 3 clients for which you’ve solved a pressing problem (preferably one that was costing them money … or one for which the solution increased their profit or client list … or one that benefited their business in some way) to develop their stories into case studies, ending with a short testimonial.

Another longer term strategy is to build in the opportunity for client feedback through all of your systems – at the end of each sale, ask the client how their experience was.

You could also consider other methods of creating credibility in addition to testimonials – for example:

- before and after case studies (with data)

- showing media appearances on your website

- using 3rd party expert endorsements

- using charts and graphs to back up your claims

- show your product/service in action via video / pictures / flow charts etc.

Here’s one that’s a bit more proactive. Always serve your customers/clients with the objective that you will be soliciting their feedback and assistance in the future. This will allow you to approach them at any time during your relationship with them. If you have a “big win” with them, I’ve found this to be a great opportunity to ask. It is human nature not to be indebted to anyone…when you do a favor for your client its a great time to cash in on that favor and ask for a testimonial. They will be glad to oblige.

Small Business Tips for Success Online

Small Business Tips For Success: The feast or famine business model

The feast of famine business model merely refers to my personal perceptions of certain prevalent business models you or anyone else might likely find while searching for a business to join online.

Most often employed by many high cost or “high ticket” programs and products online, this model for business would most accurately be described as a recipe for disaster.

The underlying premise being, at say $1000 a sale, how many sales would you need to make a return on your investment, quit your job, buy a house, etc., etc. Feast or famine…

For those with a proven track record of success online, more often than not the case for them will be feast. For those with the skewed perception that any kind of success, be it success online or success in general, happens over night; I see famine in you future.

small business tips #1:

Operating your business on the firm belief that x amount of traffic will generate y amount of conversions without the market research to prove it will cause you nothing but grief.

The best way to avoid falling prey to a feast or famine type scenario is to do your homework, and make sure that the numbers support your efforts.

For PPC (pay per click) marketing, be sure to track, track, track, everything. By using tracking links in your ad campaigns you can determine your cost per lead as well as your cost per sale along with your cost per click/click thru percentages provided by you campaign provider.

small business tips #2:

Next, estimate the value of each sale. If the income is residual, what’s the retention rate of your program or down line? Once you can place a decent estimate on how much each sale is worth and you’ve calculated your cost per lead per sale, then and only then are you in business.

Flying blind with your marketing dollars in hopes that good fortune will smile upon you is far to fanciful a notion to actually be effective. Be sure to track all your marketing efforts so that you can be aware of what works and what doesn’t; as well as what could use improvement.

small business tips #3:

To some, the entire notion of feast or famine may seem a bit much like some savage struggle for survival set in the most unforgiving of landscapes. To those individuals, I would suggest that in the time it’s taken them to form said opinion, they have most likely dropped an additional notch or two on the food chain.

Business is extremely competitive by nature. The best strategy for success is to always try to ensure you happen to be among the biggest fish in the smallest pond I can find i.e. research and niche marketing.

small business tips #4:

In summary, I’d say that most endorsements of unrealistic and unfounded business practice work off the premise that people in general will always take the path of least resistance; forever hoping to not only get something for nothing but, attain great success with little effort on their part.

A very lovely notion, but so is the lottery; and your odds would probably be about the same.

Unfortunately, I’ve found out (the hard way), that internet business is not the financial freedom vending machine I was led to believe it was. For every few dollars I put in I have yet to find happiness wrapped in $100 bills (although I do remain hopeful).

Be sure to treat your business more like a business and less like a lottery and you are sure to do well.

How to Start a Small Business – 2 Reasons Why Most Startups Fail!

Small Business, Starting Up, Tipson July 3rd, 2009No Comments

How to start a small business! Ask this question from a bunch of people and it would seem that everyone thinks they know the answer – but in reality most new businesses fail within the first year of startup.

s1

Did it ever happen to you that you saw a new kind of business and suddenly it struck you that you once had a similar idea? If you are anything like me you must have had several ideas over the past and would have felt the desire to start a small business, and out of those ideas you might even have pursued some, which you felt more confident about. Let me guess, first you tried to learn how to start a small business and then you started laying out a business plan and while contemplating, either your doubts about the idea started getting deeper and deeper because you realized that the product or service is not compelling enough to be the next “Google” or you thought that it’ll be too big of a responsibility and would require too much hard work, or maybe you even decided to proceed with the idea and started a business thinking that the hard work will pay off, but it never did!

It happens to almost every one of us and sometimes we skip or even fail on some great ideas simply because of some popular misconceptions. There is no 10 step plan or method that can tell you how to start a small business and make it successful but there are some major misconceptions that usually become the reason why most small businesses fail. I am going to discuss two of the most important factors of a business failure.

1- You need to have a compelling and unique product/service.

When people talk about how to start a small business they usually seem to have a greater emphasis on the need of a compelling product. Although it can be great to have a product/service that can sell itself, the reality is that not every market provides such advantage. If you want to start a small business and are sitting there waiting for that colossal idea – the odds of just coming up with such an idea are probably one in a million. That’s even worse than the odds of falling off a bicycle and breaking your neck.

2- The Business plan is just a formality.

Most people seem to think that a business plan is not needed for a small business or a formal plan is only needed when you are looking for an investor or applying for a loan. A business plan is the best way to learn how to start a small business, because every business opportunity is unique in itself. First of all I want to emphasize that it’s not just a formality. The business plan is perhaps one of the most important part of the process for a startup business because it shows all interested parties including yourself about how serious you are about your business. A comprehensive business plan gives you the idea about your competition, market requirement, feasibility of a business opportunity and many more contributing factors. You can’t expect your business to be successful if you don’t know your competition and if you have not done an extensive research about whether it is an opportunity worth pursuing or not. All the hard work in the world would make no difference if you are not familiar with these important aspects of your business.

How to Market Small Business Tips

Tipson June 2nd, 2009No Comments
Anyone who has ever started a business venture, either online or off, knows how important it is to announce that business. When it comes time to understanding how to market small business, of any kind or size, many people are completely lost.

While marketing takes some knowledge and experience, that doesn’t mean that you can’t do some of the legwork yourself, and in doing so, save lots of money that can be better spent elsewhere — building your business for one. For those who intend to launch a small, independent business, especially those from a home office, there are a few key tips and pointers that will help get you started in learning how to market small business ventures.

Most people have their own set of how-to-market-small-business tips, and while some work great, others don’t. First, you need to ask yourself some important questions so that you know what direction to proceed when it comes to developing a marketing plan of action.

Is your business geared to local needs, or are you offering a product or service that can reach beyond town, city or county borders? Who makes up your target base? Teens, men, women, younger adults or senior citizens? You need to know who is more likely to use your service or product so that you can create advertising or information geared toward that group. Who is your competition?

Many ‘How to Market Small Business’ books are out there for novices and experts alike, and not one of them will offer the same information. However, there are a few basics that everyone agrees on. Whether you have a large or small budget, knowing how to market small business ventures of any kind can mean the difference between success and failure when it comes time to launch that business. To be successful in marketing your business, you will need to:

Create a website

An online presence these days is essential to competition as well as offering potential customers and clients an immediate view of who you are and what you provide, whether it’s a service or product.

Create a Marketing Plan

Your marketing plan doesn’t have to be something fancy, though the size and goals of your business will need to be taken into consideration when considering your marketing plan. Potential investors will want to see one, and even if your business is run out of your garage, a marketing plan will help to develop your business goals and help to keep you on track with your product or service development.

Create an Advertising Plan

You don’t have to have a huge budget to advertise your new business. When learning how to market small business ventures yourself, always keep in mind that there are many low or no cost options open to you. If you’re on a limited budget, and who isn’t, try online advertising for your business first. You may also create business cards, fliers and brochures at a fairly low cost at neighborhood printing businesses, and you’ll save even more if you design such advertising goodies yourself. Placing ads in carefully selected newspapers and magazines will also help if your business is local. Launching a mail campaign announcing your new business is not recommended unless you already have a customer base in place.

Promote Yourself and Your New Business

Many people declare their business open and then wait for people to find them and purchase their services or goods. However, you need to promote your business in any number of different ways so that everyone knows you’re out there. Having an online presence enables you to initiate search engine submission for your website, as well as providing articles, contests, special deals and any number of promotions that will help your business get noticed and grow.

Nothing happens overnight, so you will have to be patient when learning how to market small business ventures, but if you are patient and willing to research and learn on your own, your efforts will eventually pay off. Explore any ‘how to market small business’ ideas and suggestions so that you give yourself, and your new business, every chance at success that it deserves.
